"San Junipero" straight up ends on an unambiguously happy note, and also features an incredibly optimistic and sweet romance with virtually no hints of malice or cynicism (and is fittingly sandwiched between two rather bleak episodes).Breather Episode: A few of the episodes have the endings be more bittersweet so that the viewer can't constantly assume the worst possible thing will happen every time.Any evil the artificial intelligences end up doing is either the result of their human operators deciding to use them for a sinister purpose or misapplying them out of ignorance. The artificial intelligences depicted on the show always do their best to fulfil exactly the purpose they were made for nothing more, nothing less. Meanwhile, their tormentors, those that have designated them assholes, are very clearly little better than those they attack and humiliate, often using pretensions of vigilante justice to engage in being assholes themselves.
The assholes often do things that make them seem unsympathetic such as being rude overall to engaging in child murder or pornography, but the events they go through are so utterly horrific that any sense of schadenfreude is drained right out.

Mostly, Black Mirror deals with things like the fear of losing a child or a spouse, the fear of heartbreak and infidelity, the fear of losing your social standing, etc. There are only a few episodes with more outlandish threats. Indeed, a Freeze-Frame Bonus shows they take place at about the same time - Carlton Bloom's "agitation exhibit" is mentioned during a broadcast during the Waldo Moment. UPDATE (7/28/21): List updated to reflect added reviews and changing scores.A literary series of original Black Mirror stories edited by Brooker was planned, but was postponed indefinitely in 2018 due to his lack of time to work on them. Think we missed something? Sound off in the comments. In case of ties, those titles with more reviews ranked higher with the “Average rating” (under “See Score Details”) taken into account where episodes had the same score and number of reviews. We’ve updated the list to reflect the current Tomatometer score however, it’s worth noting that early episodes like “The National Anthem” and “15 Million Merits” have scores of 100% on fewer than 20 reviews, while more recent episodes, may not have perfect scores, but have more reviews - season 4, Episode 1: "USS Callister" 95%, for example, scores in the 90s, but on 38 reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes has crunched the numbers to rank the best Black Mirror episodes down to the worst. A choose-your-own-adventure interactive episode, the release was experimental, and its score of 72% reflected an uncertain reception. Season 5 dropped on Netflix in 2019 , tackling the familiar technology-as-terror ground, with an all-star cast including Topher Grace, Miley Cyrus, and Anthony Mackie. (The fact that all of these episodes are available to be played on Netflix, the innovative streaming giant known for obsessively monitoring our usage without really sharing what they find, should not be overlooked.)Ī chapter of this paranoia-fueled scarefest, “Bandersnatch,” was unleashed at the end of December 2018. It’s arguable that creator Charlie Brooker’s episodic anthology series Black Mirror is one of the scariest shows on TV - not because it relies on zombie attacks or murderous clowns, but because it shows just how easily phones, computers, and other advancing technology that we are increasingly dependent on can be used against us if we’re not paying close enough attention.
